Pattern previews for Salt & Timber by Lindsey Fowler

Lindsey Fowler’s knitwear collection Salt & Timber is inspired by the Pacific Northwestern coast. This visually stunning book features 15 cozy designs that are intuitive and easy to knit. The patterns – including socks, shawls, sweaters, hats, mitts and even a blanket – offer thoughtful details, opportunities to make the most of your yarn stash and ways to customize the garments to fit your style.

Lindsey Fowler lives in Northeast Ohio, USA, with her high school sweetheart, her twins, her old mutt and a cat. As a designer, Lindsey likes working with textures and finding new takes on classics. She is continuously inspired by nature, architecture, and traditional handicrafts. Salt & Timber is Lindsey’s debut book.

Breathwater Socks 

This was the first pattern Lindsey designed for the book. These DK weight socks knit up quick and are so cosy and snuggly. In order to make the Breathwater Socks very stash friendly, the pattern is written to be knitted in fingering weight yarn held double. This design features ribbing, a simple cable details and an extra long cuff that can be worn folded, scrunched or pulled high.

Firewood Cap

Lindsey put a spin on the classic ribbed cap by adding a textural stripe on the flipped brim of this DK weight piece. The Firewood Cap looks great in almost any yarn and the stretchy rib and wide size range fits heads of all sizes. Make one for each family member – and while you are on it, why not for your friends and relatives too!

Set Adrift Shawl

The side-to-side shape of the triangular Set Adrift Shawl eliminates the need for the long rows you usually have to knit in shawls. A slipped stitch pattern is added as you knit and the ends are left long to create a unique fringe in the finishing. For another layer of texture, the fringe can be finished with beads of your choice to make this distinctly yours in style.

Windbound Mitts 

The Windbound Mitts are what Lindsey sees as the perfect mitt. The long wrist helps keep wind from sneaking up and biting your arms and the finger cuff can be unfolded for extra warmth if needed. The ribbing makes these mitts very forgiving in size and easy to share since they mold to the hand. For a simpler look, omit the cabled pattern and continue the ribbing through the back of the hand.

Marine Layer Socks

The fingering weight Marine Layer Socks are knitted from top down and feature a heel flap. They include a fluffy cloud layer of mohair or suri on the leg to hug your ankles and add warmth to these boot socks without sacrificing durability and practicality.

Stormwatch Cowl

The Stormwatch Cowl is designed to work with your stash and your style. Customise it by working it in one, two, three or more colours (or use all scraps) and knit as many stripes as you need for the perfect fit for you or a knitworthy loved one. The cowl is knitted seamlessly in the round and features a textural stitch pattern and Latvian Braids.

Lighthouse Keeper Pullover

With a relaxed, easy sweatshirt-like fit, the Lighthouse Keeper Pullover can be knitted for almost every body and is easy to modify. The faux seaming details at the raglan, down the side of the body and on the underside of the sleeves, add interest to the sweater without fuss and hide any jogs in the rope texture stripe. A high double collar was added as a callback to classic fisherman sweaters.

Bowline Wrap

Bowline is a classic wrap that features nautical rope-like cables over a background of garter. Sandwiched between two sections of easy, but interesting, cables is a field of mindless knitting to pick up and put down as you please. Long fringe finishes each rope to extend the motif and add playful movement to the finished piece.

Squall Slippers

The unique construction of the Squall Slippers creates a cable wrapping around the leg and an extra-cosy double-thick cuff. With all of the intricate knitting at the beginning creating the cuff, the foot is simple and fast. Knitted in worsted weight yarn held double, the foot is a sturdy fabric resulting in lots of cushion to cradle your feet.

Cape Lookout Shawl

A hike on the coast inspired Lindsey to create the triangular Cape Lookout Shawl. Seagrass-inspired lace is the centrepiece; however, the magic in this shawl results from the use of mohair on one side only creating an interesting twist. This is the perfect project to show off a single skein of special mohair or lace.

Agate Beach Hat

The slipped-stitch texture used on the Agate Beach Hat lends itself really well to collecting and combining colours. While written for 3 colours, you can easily use as few as 2 colours or as many as you like, changing yarn every 2 rows. Gather your favourite fingering weight yarns and create your own collection!

Vespertine Socks

The Vespertine Socks were inspired by the quiet of evenfall on a cabin porch. The contrasting textures of wooden siding and mossy garden stones catch the falling light and transform as the sun dips below the horizon. These fingering weight socks are knitted from the top down and feature a heel flap construction and enchanting textures.

Salt & Timber Shawl

Even with the half-circle shape and the long rows at the end, the Salt & Timber Shawl is a quick knit. The ever-evolving motifs do not get boring and are not overly complicated. The finished piece is elegant and easy to wear, a must-have for anyone who has a soft spot for the forest and sea.

Hideaway Cardigan

The Hideaway Cardigan is the perfect piece to throw over anything, even pajamas, with pockets for collecting treasures. The three-colour slipped stitch texture gives the garment dimension and allows it to adapt to many different styles depending on the palette you choose. The cardigan features a shawl collar and buttons and the 4-row repeat becomes very intuitive quickly and will become second nature, allowing you to focus on fit and shape. Hideaway is the most advanced pattern in the book.

Culmination Blanket

The Culmination Blanket allows you to blend yarn scraps and to play with colour like you would with fabric in a scrap quilt. With its large gauge, the worsted weight piece knits up much faster than a traditional scrap blanket without becoming cumbersome since you work it one square at a time. You can use this pattern as a formula to make it work for your stash.
