Inspired by the beautiful wings of young swans in late summer, the Siipi sweater is a cosy and feminine knit with a relaxed fit. “Siipi” is the Finnish word for “wing”, a fitting name for the delicate lace motif that flows down the front of the sweater. Although intricate in appearance, the lace pattern is surprisingly easy to knit.
Designed by Anna Syrjänen, Siipi is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning with the back. The sweater features a boat neck and split hems finished with a distinctive ribbed pattern. One strand of DK-weight wool is held together with one strand of silk mohair to create a soft, warm fabric with a beautiful halo and drape.
This knitting kit includes the yarn needed to make your own Siipi sweater in your chosen colourway:

The sample sweater is knitted in Tender Fog (DK) and Moment (silk mohair).

The sweater is worked by holding 1 strand of fingering-weight yarn together with 2 strands of lace-weight yarn throughout. Alternatively, you may use 1 strand of DK-weight yarn together with 1 strand of lace-weight yarn. You’ll need the same total yds / m of DK-weight and lace-weight yarn as you would of fingering-weight yarn. Please note that the type of yarn affects how the fabric drapes.
Alternative yarn suggestions are for example: 1 strand of Wilhelmi Fingering by Vuonue, Arwetta by Filcolana or Sunday by Sandnes Garn (for Yarn 1), held together with 2 strands of Filcolana Tilia or Isager Silk Mohair (for Yarn 2).

This soft, easy-going sweater is worked from the top down, beginning with the back. The lace pattern in front is
surprisingly easy to make, so Anna encourages you to try it even if you’re not such a seasoned knitter.
Siipi features a boat neck with the
same special ribbed pattern as the
split hems.
The Novita x Laine yarn is soft but has a woolly feel,
making it easy and enjoyable to knit. The shade brings
to mind the young swans that inspired the pattern, as
they grow and gradually turn from grey to white.
