Knitted Kalevala III
is the final book in the trilogy and a fantastic end to the knitwear designer Jenna Kostet’s journey into the world of Kalevala. Her stunning designs have been inspired by different poems in Kalevala and combined with mythology and traditional symbolism. The 18 patterns in this book comprise classic yoke sweaters as well as modern colourwork knits and simpler projects that are suitable for knitters less familiar with colourwork techniques.

Kalevala is considered a national epic in Finland and Jenna Kostet started knitting through its poems during the pandemic. Her first Knitted Kalevala book was published in 2022 and the second instalment in 2024. Over the course of six years, Jenna has turned the 50 poems compiled from Finnish and Karelian verses into three knitting books that provide a new way to immerse yourself in these traditions.

All in all, it has taken six years and three books to take fifty poems constructed from Finnish and Karelian lines of folk poetry and turn them into knitwear patterns, more than fifty of them in total. The job has been laborious and, in many ways, amazing.
In reality, there are as many interpretations of the Kalevala as there are people interpreting it. That’s why it always makes me happy to see other knitters making their own versions of my patterns or knits based on the poems and themes of the book.
Throughout this trilogy, I have remained faithful to my original idea, which was to present the poems in the form of colourwork patterns.

Along with traditional yoke sweaters and more modern ones, the book contains simpler designs that are easy to take on even if you’re not that familiar with colourwork knitting.
