Our autumn issue, Laine 26, Crossing Paths, takes you to the bohemian Kallio district of Helsinki, Finland. We stroll the streets of this unique, creative neighbourhood, stop by at a local café and pick up flowers from the marketplace. The issue includes twelve beautiful knits to complete your autumn outfits: they feature luscious cables, fascinating textures and innovative stripe patterns — not to mention some meditative stockinette stitch and simple colourwork. This issue truly offers something for everyone!

Designers featured in this issue: Anu Ahoniemi, Alma Bali, Melanie Berg, Alice Caetano, Ronja Hakalehto, Soumine Kim, Sanni Pauliina, Anne-Michelle Phelan, Simone Ryan, Irina Shaar, Yucca/Yuka Takahashi and Julia Wilkens.

Looking for a sumptuous cable knit to wrap yourself in? This issue has two amazing options: Soumine Kim’s Bada is a richly cabled, drop-shoulder sweater with an elegant silhouette, while Simone Ryan’s Éimi is a take on a classic Aran cardigan, featuring a variety of cables. Perfectly cosy yet stylish!
Playing with stripes is endlessly fun and fascinating. In Julia Wilkens’ Waveform shawl, wave-like chevron stripes create a rhythmic up-and-down motion, widening gradually at the end. The unique feature of Alice Caetano’s Sixty-Five design is that from far away, it looks like a sweater with thick horizontal stripes — but closer up, you see that the texture has vertical stripes in it, too!
We love knits that appear intricate yet remain simple to create. Melanie Berg’s Trustfall shawl is such a piece, with an easy-to-make mosaic pattern that instantly grabs your attention. Anu Ahoniemi’s Semiotic sweater is a fun project for those new to colourwork: half of the rounds are worked with one colour only, and half in simple stranded knitting.

“The idea of the knitwear photos was to capture the post-holiday feeling of returning to the city, rediscovering familiar street corners and reuniting with friends. On the day of the photoshoot, we had all the Nordic seasons in eight hours from rain to sunshine and chilly winds — and even a short hailstorm! But our fantastic team delivered once again, and I could not be happier with the photos!”

Tiina Vaarakallio, Laine’s Art Director
