Meet the designers for Laine Issue 28
In Laine Magazine 28, we present designs from fifteen outstanding designers from around the world. Meet Eun Mi Ahn, Fiona Alice, Autumn Buggs, Nicola Furey, Maria Gomes, Olivia Glennon, Anna Hechtman, Meiju Kallio, Pauliina Leisti, Lisa Meissner, Klara Nilsson, Sara Ottosson, Sanni Pauliina, Marie Régnier and Cata Rubke.
Eun Mi Ahn

Eun Mi Ahn comes from South Korea and lives in Canada. After studying art and baking, she opened her own bakery, where she discovered these crafts share a devotion to process and detail. These insights led her to focus on knitwear design. Eun Mi’s designs emphasise the making process, and each stitch is made with that future wearer in mind.
For this issue, Eun Mi designed the comfortable Vacilando vest worked in a geometric basketweave pattern.
Fiona Alice

Fiona Alice comes from Nova Scotia, Canada, but has been living in Helsinki, Finland, for almost eight years. Besides her design work, she works at a restaurant — as knitting is often a solitary work, she likes the social aspect of serving. Fiona considers herself a fairly quiet and slow designer. Each of her pieces is a thoughtful exploration of fibre, texture and technique.
For this issue, Fiona designed the Pinehurst cardigan, which offers a coat-like layer for cooler spring mornings and evenings.
Autumn Buggs

These days, Autumn Buggs is most inspired by the fashion world: she loves to look at sewn garments and imagine them as knitwear. Autumn is based on the East Coast of the United States and works as a full-time knitwear designer. To her, knitting is expression: getting to explore creativity, and to create something that fits you, both in body and soul.
For this issue, Autumn designed the breezy Cockle top with i-cord ties at the sides.
Nicola Furey

Nicola is a “London girl” now living in Bedfordshire, England. She had a career in fashion buying before starting her own business, called Tea Cake + Make, where she designs and makes craft project bags, storage and notions, alongside her pattern design work. Nicola can find inspiration anywhere, and she always carries a notebook to scribble down ideas.
For this issue, Nicola designed the Springtide socks, featuring a colourwork motif that gives energy and movement with its curves and waves.
Olivia Glennon

Olivia Glennon lives in Massachusetts, USA, and works as a software developer. She loves knitting as a form of self-expression. In her patterns, Olivia tries to find a blend of engaging-to-knit colour and pattern with enough of a challenge to keep someone interested, but with a wearable construction.
For this issue, Olivia designed the Seafoam Cables sweater, inspired by vintage New England coastal sweaters.
Maria Gomes

Maria Gomes is a knitwear designer and teacher who also organises knitting retreats and is the co-founder of the Knit with Friends festival. As a designer, Maria loves creating timeless knitwear with a modern twist. Lately, she has been drawn to soft, organic textures and simple stitches that create beautiful surfaces without overcomplicating the knitting.
For this issue, Maria designed the Filigree sweater, where delicate cables and slipped stitches form diamond motifs on a reverse stockinette background.
Anna Hechtman

Anna Hechtman lives in Melbourne, Australia. She studied psychology and worked for many years as an academic in mental health. When Anna’s children were young, the pull of making something with her hands led her to study textile design at night, and, eventually, to start experimenting with texture in knitting. Anna loves textures and patterns and finds them everywhere.
For this issue, Anna designed the Picnic shawl featuring a basketweave pattern and cable panel.
Meiju Kallio

Meiju Kallio is a knitwear designer and author based in Helsinki, Finland. She studied social sciences, and for years her work focused on the development of data collection. These days, Meiju designs knitwear and works as a producer at a publishing house where she is responsible for craft-related content. She is known for her intricate and beautifully finished knits.
For this issue, Meiju created Honeymist: an effortless T-shirt with soft, romantic cables.
Pauliina Leisti

Pauliina Leisti lives in Tuusula, Finland. She is a creative entrepreneur and artist, working with many different ideas and interests. Pauliina’s design philosophy is based on comfort: most often, her process begins with the idea of how the garment feels when worn. Over the past year, Pauliina has spent a lot of time making art, and she finds it to be very inspiring.
For this issue, Pauliina designed Artist: a relaxed, oversized T-shirt with a bohemian feel to it.
Lisa Meissner

Lisa Meissner originally comes from Germany and has been living in Zurich, Switzerland, for the past ten years. She is an architect who works at an architectural office for two days a week, while the rest of her time is devoted to designing knitwear and teaching knitting classes. Most of Lisa’s inspiration comes from architecture, graphic illustrations and textile art.
For this issue, Lisa designed the colourful Flickflauder shawl, a new interpretation of the classic triangular shawl.
Klara Nilsson

Klara Nilsson (known as Klarybarry) describes her design style as playful and colourful — she enjoys experimenting with patterns and structures. Klara comes from a small town in southern Sweden called Karlskrona. Besides designing knitwear, she works in her local yarn shop. Klara is inspired by fun, colourful things that make her happy.
For this issue, Klara designed the Cloud Tee — a T-shirt featuring simple, almost cartoonish cloud motifs.
Sara Ottosson

Sara Ottosson comes from Sweden and lives in a town called Västerås. They are a part-time knitwear designer and part-time freelance prop maker and set builder, mainly building and decorating exhibitions. For Sara, knitting is a way to play and create something that is truly, uniquely them. They get inspired by architecture, patterns, colour combinations and mixing techniques.
For this issue, Sara designed the Only Lovers Left sweater — a mix of a henley, an overshirt and a classic crew-neck pullover.
Sanni Pauliina

Sanni Pauliina is a knitwear designer who has a BA degree in design. She lives in a small town in the Pirkanmaa area in Finland and gets most of her ideas from nature: interesting textures and shapes that she wants to translate into knitting. She is known for her dark colours, rustic knits and use of natural fibres.
For this issue, Sanni design the relaxed If You Believe cardigan, featuring broken ribbing enhanced by cable-like motifs on the sides.
Marie Régnier

Marie Régnier lives in a small village near Rambouillet — home of the famous Rambouillet wool — not far from Paris. She balances her career as a banker with her creative work as a knitwear designer. Marie’s designs are rooted in her multicultural background, her love for romantic and bohemian atmospheres, and her everyday life that remains grounded in an urban, Parisian rhythm.
For this issue, Marie designed the Myriade sweater, mostly knitted in stockinette stitch, delicately punctuated by lace panels.
Cata Rubke

Cata Rubke comes from Santiago, Chile. She works full-time in the wool and knitwear world: in addition to designing patterns, Cata teaches knitting classes and runs an online yarn shop with a carefully curated fibre selection. Cata’s goal is always to create garments that people can truly enjoy wearing in their everyday lives, with a balance between simplicity and interesting details.
For this issue, Clara designed the airy and fresh Clara top with buttons at the back to add a vintage touch.
