Our Top Picks for Socktober!

It is officially Socktober, and it is time to knit socks! What started as a charity effort has become a yearly activity in the knitting community every October. To celebrate the theme, our editorial team reveals which pair of socks from Laine’s publications they want to cast on next (and with what kind of needles!).

Joyce Socks by Charlotte Stone

Joyce by Charlotte Stone

“As a long-time admirer of Charlotte Stone’s work, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the chance to knit her Joyce socks ever since the sample pair arrived at our office. The charming, floral colourwork pattern evokes a sense of nostalgia and would bring warmth and joy even to the gloomiest winter days.” – Sini Kramer, COO, CoFounder of Laine Publishing

DPNs or circulars? “Circulars because my DPNs always tend to fall out.”

Vellamo by Jenna Kostet

“I love designs with stories attached to them, and the myth of Vellamo, a Finnish water goddess, is right up my alley! In these socks, the combination of a little bit of texture and colourwork is interesting. In addition, the long cuffs, which can also be worn folded, look like they would keep my easily frozen feet nice and warm.” – Pauliina Kuunsola, Senior Editor

DPNs or circulars? “DPNs because that’s how I learned, and it feels like too much fuss to change.”

Polku by Heli Rajavaara

“As a way of trying to get out of my sock knitting slump, I’ve decided to cast on a pair of simple, textured socks. I have a skein of deep green, hand-dyed yarn that I think will be a perfect match with Heli Rajavaara’s beautiful Polku sock pattern. Short, easy-to-memorise pattern repeat also makes these great for TV knitting!” – Tiia Pyykkö, Producer

DPNs or circulars? “I'm team Magic Loop and circular needles all the way! I got rid of my DPNs years ago and have never looked back.”

Diamond Kite by Susan Crawford

“I think this pair would make for a great scrap yarn project, and those always come in handy. Also, I have been avoiding stranded colourwork for years, so it’s time to leave my comfort zone! This pretty yet repeating motif would offer just the right amount of challenge.” – Maija Kangasluoma, Managing Editor

DPNs or circulars? “DPNs. They just feel better in my hands, and I also like their clickety-clack sounds!”

Veera by Lucinda Guy

“These socks charmed me with their beautiful details! I would knit them in a similar light shade, or choose my personal favourite, burnt orange. The socks would great look paired with floral dresses and chunky cardigans.” – Henna Haarala, Intern

DPNs or circulars? ”I pfefer DPNs, more specifically KnitPro Cubics. They help me maintain an even gauge.”
