Pattern Previews for Knitted Kalevala II

Knitted Kalevala II by Jenna Kostet contains 20 colourwork patterns inspired by poems from the Kalevala, from sweaters and cardigans to cosy accessories.

Puiden Synty

Puiden synty is worked from the hem up. The body and the sleeves are joined to work the yoke embellished with colourwork. The contrast colour is worked with two yarns held together.

Yarns: Vuonue Onneli as the main colour (MC), Vuonue Pentti and Lang Lace held together as the contrast colour (CC). Dark sample shown in colourways Vuonue Onneli Luonnonmusta (MC), Vuonue Pentti Havu and Lang Lace Nurmi held together (CC), and green sample in colourways Vuonue Onneli Sammalenvihreä (MC), Vuonue Pentti Vaalea Oliivi and Lang Lace Nurmi held together (CC).

You can substitute Vuonue Onneli with other soft or single-ply worsted or aran weight yarns (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Myrskyluodon Villalanka or Norwegian Sandnes Garn Alpakka Ull.

Vellamo 

The Vellamo socks are worked from the top down. They feature texture and colourwork in the leg. The heel is worked with a gusset and the toe is rounded. The cuff is long and can also be worn folded. You can also begin working the pattern directly after the cuff ribbing.

Yarns: Aara Tuuma, shown in colourways Helmi (MC) and Jalo (CC). You can substitute Aara Tuuma with another sport weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example German Schachenmayr Regia Premium Merino Yak or Norwegian Sandnes Garn Sisu.

Raudan Synty

Raudan synty is worked in the round from the bottom up and steeked open. The sleeves of the cardigan are worked separately and joined to the body for the yoke. The cardigan has a textured stitch pattern and the yoke is decorated with colourwork.

Yarns: Jalovilla Pässi, shown in colourways Raudan synty (MC) and Tuhka (CC). You can substitute Jalovilla Pässi with another DK weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Jalovilla Uuhi, Tukuwool DK or Vuonue Pentti, Portuguese Rosa Pomar Brusca or Icelandic Ístex Plötulopi.

Sampo

Sampo is a raglan sweater worked from the top down. It has a tall, ribbed collar, narrow sleeves and colourwork in the hem. The sweater is designed to have a loose fit. The colourwork has some long floats, so when knitting, make sure not to pull them too tight.

Yarn: Tukuwool DK, shown in Hohka (MC) and Manna (CC). You can substitute Tukuwool DK with another DK weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Vuonue Pentti, Portuguese Rosa Pomar Brusca and Icelandic Ístex Plötulopi.

Hiiden Hirven Hiihto

Hiiden hirven hiihto begins from the hem, which is decorated with a colourwork pattern. The sleeves are worked separately and joined to the body. The yoke has raglan decreases and the cardigan is knitted in the round and steeked open.

Yarn: Ístex Léttlopi, shown in colourways Bottle Green Heather 1405 (MC) and Light Beige Heather 0086 (CC). You can substitute Ístex Léttlopi with another worsted or aran weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Vuonue Manta or Usko or Danish BC Garn Northern Lights.

Tuonelan Virta

Tuonelan virta is worked from the bottom up. The sweater has colourwork in the hem, cuffs and yoke. The double cuff in the sleeves and the neckline is worked in the contrast colour. You can also knit regular sleeves, but you will need to prepare with more of the main colour.

Yarns: Ístex Léttlopi, shown in colourways Black Sheep Heather 0052 (MC) and Straw 1418 (CC). You can substitute Ístex Léttlopi with another worsted or aran weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Vuonue Manta and Usko, Danish BC Garn Northern Lights, French Biches et Bûches Le Gros Lambswool or US Magpie Fibers Nest Worsted.

Tuonen Tytti

Tuonen Tytti Kalevala

Tuonen tytti begins from the hem, the sleeves are worked separately and joined to the body for the yoke. This sweater has a flared hem and the yoke is decorated with a simple lace pattern.

Yarns: Vuonue Wilhelmi, shown in colourways Luonnonmusta (MC) and Maitokahvi (CC). You can substitute Vuonue Wilhelmi with another fingering weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Tukuwool Fingering, Jalovilla Vuona, Canadian Lichen and Lace Rustic Heather Sport, German BC Garn Bio Shetland or US Brooklyn Tweed Loft.

Veneenveistosanat

Veneenveistosanat is worked from the bottom up. The sweater has a simple cable pattern in the body and colourwork on the sleeves. You can also use different colours of waste yarn to work the colourwork.

Yarns: Jalovilla Räsy and Jalovilla Uuhi, shown in colourways Kaste (MC) and Kuusi (CC). You can substitute Jalovilla Räsy and Uuhi with another DK weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Tukuwool DK, Vuonue Kierrätys-Tilta or Portuguese Rosa Pomar Brusca.

Sariola

Sariola is a sweater with a lot of ease. The hem is decorated with colourwork and the yoke has raglan decreases and a tall neckline. The sleeves are loose, so you can wear it on top of other layers, even another sweater and use it as a jacket.

Yarns: Vuonue Onneli, shown in colourways Vaalea sinivihreä (MC, pale green) and Luonnonvalkoinen (CC). You can substitute Vuonue Onneli with another unspun or worsted or aran weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Myrskyluodon Villalanka or Icelandic Istéx Léttlopi.

Pohjolan häät

Pohjolan häät is a stunning sweater, worked from the top down. The yoke, hem and cuffs have lace and bobbles, and the yoke is decorated with colourwork. If you work the body length longer than instructed, you’ll get a snuggly sweater dress for winter.

Yarns: Ístex Alafosslopi, shown in colourways White 0051 (MC) and Garden Green 1231 (CC). You can substitute Ístex Alafosslopi with another chunky weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish unspun Vuonue Unelma or Norwegian Rauma Garn Vams.

Lähde Kukka Kulkemahan

Lähde kukka kulkemahan is worked seamlessly from the top down. The top has short raglan sleeves and colourwork in the hem. The neckline, hem and cuffs are left to roll in.

Aara Lauha, shown in colourways Amfora (MC) and Leilakei (CC). You can substitute Aara Lauha with another fingering weight yarn (or any yarn you get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Portuguese Merino Linen or Danish Isager Merlin.

Kotimatka

Kotimatka is worked seamlessly from the top down. The yoke of the sweater has a colourwork pattern. You can work it in one colour or use scrap yarn and work it in many colours.

Yarns: Wetterhoff Kruunu, shown in colourways Aniliini (MC) and Luonnonvalkoinen (CC). You can substitute Wetterhoff Kruunu with another fingering weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Tukuwool Fingering, Aurinkokehrä Fingering or French Rauma Garn Finull.

Lemminkäinen

Knitted Kalevala II Lemminkäinen

Lemminkäinen is worked top down. The ribbing on the neckline is folded double and the yoke has a colourwork pattern. The hem of this sweater is shaped with short rows, making the back a little longer than the front.

Yarns: Vuonue Usko, shown in colourways Luonnonmusta (MC) and Ruoste (CC). You can substitute Vuonue Usko with another worsted or aran weight yarn (or any yarn you get gauge with). Kullervo

Knitted Kalevala II

The Kullervo socks begin from the cuff. The socks have an all-over colourwork pattern on the leg and a reinforced heel. You can also work the colourwork in scrap yarn from your stash.

Yarns: Sandnes Garn Sisu, shown in colourways Tumma Suklaa 3880 (MC), Kalkki 2319 (CC1) and Petrooli 6553 (CC2). You can substitute Sandnes Garn Sisu with another fingering or sport weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Kaitse Karja Kaunihisti

Knitted Kalevala II

Kaitse karja kaunihisti is a loose dress worked from the bottom up. It has a v-neck and dropped shoulders. A colourwork pattern is worked in the hem and the cuffs. The yardage and measurements have been calculated based on a long dress, but you can always shorten the length of the hem, or even knit a top.

Yarns: Vuonue Wilhelmi, shown in colourways Maitokahvi (MC) and Havu (CC). You can substitute Vuonue Wilhelmi with another fingering weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Metsän väki has a wide and cropped body and it is worked seamlessly from the bottom up. The sweater has a tall collar, long sleeves and dropped shoulders. The hem and cuffs have colourwork.

Yarns: Tukuwool Fingering, shown in colourways Mantu (MC) and Aubergine (CC). You can substitute Tukuwool Fingering with another fingering weight yarn (or any yarn you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Vuonue Wilhelmi or Elsa as well as Kierrätys-Elsa, Portuguese Rosa Pomar Pegulhal, Canadian Lichen and Lace Rustic Heather Sport or German BC Garn Bio Shetland.

Mull’ On Korvessa Kotini

Mull’ on korvessa kotini is worked from the top down. The sweater has a folded neckline and colourwork in the hem, cuffs and yoke. You can knit the sweater holding two yarns together or choose a soft and well-draping worsted or aran weight yarn.

Yarns: Säie Merino DK and Säie Silk Mohair, shown in colourways Faithful Fern (MC) and Heart of the Night (CC). You can substitute Säie Merino DK and Säie Silk Mohair with other DK weight and silk-mohair yarn combinations, for example Vuonue Pentti and Lang Lace. You can also use worsted or aran weight yarn with great drape (or any yarn you can get gauge with), for example Sadnes Garn Alpakka Ull.

Meren Luo’olle Lokiksi

Meren luo’olle lokiksi is a short-sleeved sweater. It is worked from the top down and has colourwork in the yoke. The cropped length widens slightly towards the hem. The neckline, cuffs and hem are worked in two-colour ribbing.

Yarns: De Rerum Natura Ulysse, shown in colourways Bois the Rose (MC) and Quartz (CC). You can substitute De Rerum Natura Ulysse with another sport weight yarn (or any you can get gauge with). Great alternatives are for example Finnish Aara Tuuma, Vuonue Pentti or Norwegian Sandnes Garn Tweed Recycled.

Kuunteleva Metsä Cowl

Knitted Kalevala II

The Kuunteleva metsä cowl is worked in the round and the ends are sewn together. You can work the cowl in different yarn weights, just check the length and adjust when needed. I recommend using a yarn that is not scratchy, so it will feel nice against the skin. You can wrap the 47" / 120 cm cowl twice around the neck.

Kuunteleva Metsä Socks

Knitted Kalevala II

The Kuunteleva metsä socks are worked from the top down. They feature an all-over colourwork pattern, a short-row heel and a rounded toe. You can knit either a shorter or longer version of the leg, depending on your preference.
