TV, Music, Podcast, Audiobook Tips For Knitters!

Many knitters like to combine their knitting with other activities — be it watching the telly or listening to a good audiobook. But what is the Laine team listening to or watching at the moment? Here are a few TV, music, audiobook and podcast recommendations from Laine’s editorial team, our authors and our regular freelancers. Grab your needles and enjoy!

“Lately, I've been listening to Think Like a Monk: The Secret of How to Harness the Power of Positivity and Be Happy Now by Jay Shetty. In the book, Shetty shares the lessons he has learned as a practising monk in a way that makes them applicable to everyday life as well. I've made plenty of notes on ideas I want to implement into my life — and I'm only halfway through!”
Pauliina Kuunsola, Laine’s senior editor and in-house tech editor and the author of Soothing Stitches: Knits for a Quiet Mind

“In the Venn diagram of my daughters and me, we all overlap at craft and murder mysteries. So we are currently knitting and crocheting while watching The Residence (Netflix, 2025, 1 season). It's clever, funny and stylish — but definitely too absorbing for more than simple stitches!”
Amelia Hodsdon, Laine’s regular proofreader, writer & tech editor

“My favourite artist to listen to right now is Laufey. Her album Bewitched is perfect for mood music around the house or for a very relaxed and jazzy knitting or sewing session. She just announced a new album coming out in August and I can’t wait!”
Lindsey Fowler, knitwear designer and author of Trails & Valleys: Knitwear for Family Adventures

“I’m a heavy Netflix user and enjoy a wide range of genres. I appreciate the British sense of drama, and the last show I watched was the thriller Black Doves, which was complex enough to be truly engaging. I hope there will be a second season.”
Meiju Kallio, knitwear designer and author of Entwined: Cables, Lace and Knitted Textures

“As someone who loved mixtapes growing up, I’m a devoted user of Spotify playlists. Mostly, I just type in the word ‘indie’ or ‘folk’ (my genres of choice) and add the mood I am looking for: be it ‘sad indie’, ‘classic folk’ or ‘energetic indie’, and enjoy the playlist that Spotify curates for me. My only complaint to Spotify is that they seem to be able to generate ‘indie running’, ‘indie cleaning’ and ‘indie cooking’ lists — but not ‘indie knitting’. What’s up with that?”
Maija Kangasluoma, Laine’s managing editor

“I am not the biggest football fan, but with Ted Lasso, I was hooked from the first episode. The series is set in the world of the English Premier League and features many distinctive characters. From a knitter's perspective, the only downside of this comedy-drama is that three seasons don’t last long enough.”
Irina Kauppinen, Laine’s regular freelance graphic designer

Golden Kamuy (Netflix) is a combination of a movie and the first season of a series. A thrilling tale set in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, starring a war veteran and an Ainu girl on the hunt for a fortune in gold. And when you've enjoyed the Netflix live-action version, there's more: the anime series (4 seasons) and, of course, the original manga (the complete story, but sadly a bit challenging to enjoy while knitting at the same time!).”
Aatu Äikiä, Laine’s warehouse assistant

“I'm a big fan of pop culture and celebrity gossip, so my go-to podcast while knitting is the Shameless podcast. It's hosted by two Australian writers who describe the podcast brilliantly as ‘a pop culture podcast for smart people who love dumb stuff’ — and that's exactly what you get. It’s a perfect escape from mundane life while knitting.”
Paula Narkinemi, knitwear designer and author of Everyday Knits: Easy Wardrobe Essentials

“It doesn’t necessarily take a detective to see the connection between solving crossword puzzles and solving crimes, as the BBC hit comedy-drama Ludwig (2024) proves. In this clever and entertaining mystery series, renowned puzzle designer John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor follows in the footsteps of famous British fictional detectives like Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, as he tries to find out what happened to his twin brother. As the show's pace is not too fast and the driving force of the drama is not action, it would be an excellent choice for TV knitting. However, I enjoyed all six episodes on their own, simply because, as a beginner knitter, combining knitting with any other activity is impossible – just like trying to solve a crossword and a murder at the same time!”
Tiina Vaarakallio, Laine’s art director

"I’m a heavy podcast listener — my regulars include The Daily and The Journal — but for knitters looking for rich storytelling to accompany their stitches, I highly recommend This American Life. With a vast archive spanning decades, this iconic radio show-turned-podcast has been a staple of American audio journalism since 1995. Hosted by Ira Glass, each episode explores a theme through engaging, often surprising stories from everyday life. It’s the perfect backdrop for a long knitting session — thoughtful, moving, and endlessly listenable.
Päivi Kankaro, Digital marketing & E-commerce Manager

I listen to “Help I sexted my boss” .. it’s not a sex podcast, it deals with every day dilemmas from listeners writing in and etiquette advice. Yes! It’s a fun and entertaining podcast.

It is a significant share. Thank you first of all. I love watching crime series on TV. Lately, if I am working on projects that need my attention, I mostly listen to audiobooks or podcasts. I love listening to The Long Thread podcast. I will check Haptic & Hoe.
My favourite audiobooks to listen to while knitting are English literature classics, such as Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, or Dickens. :) I also listen to crime and historical novels occasionally.

When I’m knitting or crocheting I get absolutely lost in the process and sometimes don’t even hear things around me. But I love Jazz music, all types, but especially lady singers from the 1940’s, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan…they come through loud and clear.
