Jeanette’s creations are modern and edgy, pushing the boundaries of traditional knitting techniques while challenging the knitter to create something inspirational and breathtakingly beautiful.
The beaded garments and accessories that Jeanette has created for this collection are chic, stylish, totally wearable, and show off the beads to their very sparkly best.
Like tiny dots of light, glass beads can add a touch of luxury to the humblest of fibres, a comforting tactile quality to the plainest knit and as much embellishment to a project as you care, or dare, to add.

“Beaded colourwork is the term I use to describe the technique of threading beads onto yarn in a predetermined sequence in order to create motifs or patterns that are revealed as the item is knitted.”

deeply artistic

I find this book and Jeannette Sloan's imagination so exquisite as being simply moving. I absolutely needed to purchase it as soon as I saw the artistic content. It is knitting and beading with respect for long traditions, fresh imagination, delicacy, practicality, boldness, humanity and depth. I am a major fan!

Wow...what a beautiful book! I'm so jealous of my friend who's going to the Nashville Yarn Fest and will be able to attend the class Jeanette is giving there!

Very disappointing

Very disappointing. I expected a much more diverse approach to the use of beads in knitting. Absolutely nothing on First Nations traditions. Certainly Canadian First Nations and Inuit have a detailed history of working with beads. Shocking that there are no examples of the Greelandic beaded collars and garments, and no references to other traditions.

Dear Emerald,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We truly appreciate readers who engage deeply with the subject matter.

Beaded Colourwork: A Modern Approach to Knitting with Beads is intended as a contemporary design-focused book that explores Jeanette Sloan’s personal approach to incorporating beads into modern knitwear. It is not conceived as a historical or academic survey of global beading traditions, but rather as a presentation of Jeanette’s signature style and creative practice.

You are absolutely right that First Nations, Inuit and Greenlandic traditions have a rich and important history of beadwork and textile adornment. Those traditions deserve dedicated space and thoughtful exploration in their own right. While this particular book focuses on Jeanette’s contemporary perspective, we appreciate your reminder of the broader cultural contexts in which beadwork exists.

We appreciate you raising this point, and we will consider how we can communicate the scope of the book even more clearly.

Warm regards,
Päivi
