Description

Echoes: 24 Modern Knits Inspired by Iconic Women features knitwear patterns dedicated to incredible women — both real and fictional — who have influenced the designer Susan Crawford’s life. The array of icons includes authors such as Beatrix Potter and Virginia Woolf, the musicians Cyndi Lauper and Kate Bush, as well as activists, artists, garden designers and more.

This versatile collection features a variety of styles and techniques. It includes cardigans, sweaters, vests, and a dress, as well as shawls, socks, hats, mittens, a blanket, and even a tie. Susan created the designs to resemble heirloom pieces, well-loved and handed down through generations, with stories interwoven into their fabric.

The knitting book showcases the continuing impact of others on each of us, and how inspiration often works: creating layers within layers, echoes within echoes.

Susan Crawford is a British knitwear designer and author with her own hand-dyed yarn range. She is known for her work on modernising vintage knitwear patterns. Echoes is Susan’s eighth book.

The designs in the book have been inspired by women — some real, some fictional — who have been influential in Susan’s life in some way. You can find out more about them in the essays that accompany each pattern.
All patterns in the book are knitted with Susan’s own range of yarns. They are custom blends of British breed sheep, spun in the UK and hand-dyed at Susan’s studio in a former mill. As most of them are standard weight, they can also easily be substituted.
The book’s photos were taken in a fell high above Lake Coniston in the Lake District — a region and national park in North West England, where Susan lives — and the stunning landscape is present throughout the book.

“I hope every knitter will find many things that they wish to knit; that they will turn to this book again and again and that it will become as dog-eared, worn and loved as any novel that has been read and re-read.”
