Pattern Previews for Laine 17

Laine 17 features eleven patterns by an international group of designers: Julia Disini, Rastus Hsu, Elena Solier Jansà, Pauliina Leisti, Veronika Lindberg, Marie Régnier, Jacquline Rivera, Lene Tøsti, Maija Vasala, Pope Vergara and Thea Vesterby.

Julia Disini — Dress to Impress

For Julia Disini, mohair is the best material for making luxurious statement garments. Dress to Impress is a fluffy, oversized cardigan designed for moments when you want to feel gorgeous without needing to dress up. It is worked from the bottom up in one piece to the underarms. After that, the fronts and back are worked separately to the shoulder. The stitches for the sleeves are picked up from the armhole.

Yarn: Chunky Mohair by Kokon.

Rastus Hsu — JingWoo

JingWoo is a rectangular shawl inspired by origami, a traditional Japanese paper-folding art. The shawl is knitted flat from end to end, and it uses simple knits and purls in a clever way. The purl stitches create little folds in the fabric, giving it a 3-dimensional form. The vibrant orange hue makes the shawl a stand-out accessory.

Yarn: Opus by Walcot Yarns.

Elena Solier Jansà — Utopia

Utopia is a cropped, top-down pullover with ³/₄ sleeves. It is one of those sweaters that you can wear every day with jeans or over a dress; elegant, in a casual way. Utopia features an easy lace pattern on the body and Stockinette Stitch on the sleeves. A little cable detail decorates the raglan seam. The knitted fabric is loose and drapey, perfect for summer.

Yarn: Pastoreta by Xolla.

Pauliina Leisti — Aamuyö

Aamuyö is a delicate top-down cardigan with a relaxed fit. The textural stitch pattern is created using two yarns: fuzzy silk mohair and fine alpaca. The surface of the fabric reminded Pauliina Leisti of summer nights when the colours of nature blend in and become wreathed in early morning mist — Aamuyö is Finnish for “small hours”. The button band completes the sophisticated look.

Yarns: Lace Mohair Superkid Silk & Baby Alpaca by Lang.

Veronika Lindberg — Linescapes

Linescapes is a cosy yet elegant cardigan, worked top-down with large needles. The purl rows create a subtle striped effect on the fabric, and the fold-down collar gives the design a subtle vintage vibe. It was inspired by 1950s knitting magazines Veronika Lindberg found in a thrift shop. The gorgeous green shade will bring a hint of colour to any outfit without being hard to match.

Yarn: Snefnug by CaMaRose.

Marie Régnier — Seashells

This top-down pattern was inspired by happy, sunny days at the beach. The Seashells top has a simple shape emphasised by a highly textured stitch pattern that keeps the knitter interested. The surface of the fabric looks like simple 2/2 ribbing from afar, but at a closer look, you can see the intricacy of the cabled pattern.

Yarn: Tencel-Cotton by Katia.

Jacquline Rivera — Socks à la Mode

The Socks à la Mode pattern grew from a picture Jacquline Rivera took on a boardwalk along the New Jersey Shore. On her summers there, a trip to the beach isn’t complete without frozen custard in a waffle cone. Socks à la Mode is knit cuff down, with strawberry and lemon ice-cream cones in stranded knitting on the leg. The socks are a fun burst of colour with a side of whimsy.

Yarn: Smooth Sock by The Uncommon Thread.

Lene Tøsti — Sound of Spring

Sound of Spring is a slightly asymmetrical triangular shawl with texture, lace and stripes. The shawl is knitted on the bias and has a beautiful scalloped edge. A single-ply yarn in a light colour makes the texture of the rounded garter stitch sections stand out beautifully. For the contrast stripes, Lene wanted a pop of colour. The size is easy to alter: just knit as many pattern repeats as you want.

Yarn: Cottage Merino by Walk Collection

Maija Vasala — Kainuu

The Kainuu sweater is named after the region in Finland where Maija Vasala grew up. The sweater has beautiful berry and leaf motifs both in the yoke and the hem. The colourwork pattern is adapted from a pair of mittens Maija got from her mother years ago. The cropped length and loose fit give this folklore-inspired design a modern look.

Yarn: Tukuwool Fingering

Pope Vergara — Liberty

This lightweight sweater calls for those carefree summer days. Liberty features delicate ruffles on the body, knitted with a golden thread along the edges, and the neckline and cuffs are decorated with beads. The sweater is knitted seamlessly from the bottom up, and the fluffy puff sleeves are shaped with short rows. An entertaining pattern that uses a variety of techniques without being too difficult!

Yarns: Marina by Manos del Uruguay, Silk Mohair by Isager and Mineral Silk by Purl Soho

Thea Vesterby — Wave

The Wave sweater is worked from the top down, featuring Stockinette Stitch and a lovely, wave-like lace pattern. The back yoke is worked first, then the fronts are picked up from the shoulders, worked down the body and joined to form the neck. This pattern gives great opportunities for playing with colours. The textured stripes can be worked in one or two colours, and you can also change colour for the ribbing.

Yarn: Double Sunday by Sandnes Garn.
