Submission Call: 52 Weeks of One Skein Wonders

We are putting together a new collection celebrating the beauty and potential of that single, special skein. 52 Weeks of One Skein Wonders will feature projects that can be completed with one 100-gram skein of yarn or two 50-gram skeins — think socks, mittens, hats, and of course, small scarves and shawls.

Most of us have those treasured skeins tucked away in our stash: a souvenir from a yarn festival, a gift from a dear friend, or a yarn we’ve been saving for just the right project. This book is all about giving those skeins the spotlight they deserve.

While stripes and colourwork are welcome, we’re primarily looking for designs that make the most of a single 100-gram skein — patterns that feel complete, satisfying, and wearable, even when made from a modest amount of yarn.

We’re drawn to pieces that are approachable and refined: knits that look as good on the needles as they do in your everyday wardrobe. A simple hat with exquisite shaping, mittens with subtle texture, a small shawl that drapes just right — these are the kinds of designs we can’t wait to see.

As always, we adore clear, elegant design thinking. Projects that are too complex or that combine too many ideas tend to lose their charm. The best designs feel intentional and effortless — the ones knitters will want to make again and again.

We’re excited to see your interpretations and to discover how much magic you can create with just one skein of yarn.

PLEASE NOTE! The patterns should be written in a clear, easy-to-follow and short way. While submitting your design ideas, please be also very mindful of the number and size of charts. Please avoid designs with very large charts and keep in mind that the maximum size of a chart that can fit nicely into one page is around 40 x 50 boxes.

DEADLINES

The submission call runs until December 14, 2025. If your design has been selected, we will notify you by mid-January, 2026.

Deadlines for finished, test knitted patterns between end of February and mid-April 2026.

MOODBOARD

Find the moodboard here.

We expect designers to knit the samples and run the secret test knits. Laine takes care of tech editing and sample shipping.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is based on difficulty. Compensation is paid as soon as we have received the sample and the finished, test knitted pattern and tech editing is completed. Yarn support is organised by Laine in collaboration with yarn companies. Laine holds the exclusive rights to the patterns for 5 months (beginning from the publication day of the book). After the exclusivity period, designers are free to sell the pattern on their own as well.

SUBMISSION

Submit your designs (several entries are more than welcome!) to hello@lainepublishing.com. Send all your submissions in one email. Please note that we only accept original designs. Patterns may not have been published or shared elsewhere (incl. pictures of WIPs or finished projects).

Provide at least the following information: your name, possible designer website or Ravelry username, a detailed description of your design (inc. an estimation of the provided charts), preferred yarn, a sketch and a swatch. We would also love to hear the story behind the design: what inspired you, how you think the pattern fits into our publication, etc.

Please note that we do not require you to have an existing portfolio of published patterns, as we take great pride in featuring beginning and lesser-known designers. We have an experienced and dedicated team providing help and support as needed.

We welcome submissions from around the world, no matter your race, ethnicity, religion, ability, gender, size, sexual identity or age. Each submission will be carefully reviewed and considered.
